Rebel Attack With Assembled Bomb Kills 22 Nigerian Soldiers

JAKARTA - A total of 22 soldiers were killed and several others injured in Nigeria after rebels deployed homemade explosives and suicide bombers to ward off military attacks.

Military spokesman Edward Buba said on Sunday evening they launched an attack 10 days ago on rebels in the northeast and killed more than 70 militants including three of its commanders.

Buba said government forces also shot down the drone used by rebels.

The Boko Haram Militant and the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) are mostly operating in the state of Borno, targeting security forces and civilians in the uprising that displaced tens of thousands of people.

On Friday last week, suspected Islamic rebels killed 20 Nigerian soldiers, including a commander, in an attack on a military base in a remote town of Borno, according to security sources and local residents.
