The Ministry Of Industry Uses CCU Technology To Reduce Emissions From The Industrial Sector

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) has chosen to use Carbon Capture Utilization (CCU) technology to reduce emissions from the industrial sector.

CCU technology allows carbon dioxide produced by industrial processes to be captured, processed, and converted into useful products that can be utilized by other industrial sectors.

With this technology, the industry can reduce emissions while producing products that have economic value.

In order to reduce emissions in the petrochemical industry, the Ministry of Industry signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with UWin Resources Re Energy Inc and PT Petrokimia Gresik regarding pilot projects (pilot projects) for the use of capture technology and carbon utilization.

The Ministry of Industry is working with UWin Resources Regency Inc, which has experience in developing Carbon Capture and Industrial Emission Reduction (CCIER) technology.

This pilot project will be implemented at PT Petrokimia Gresik, which is included in the petrochemical industry sub-sector which is a priority for decarbonization.

It is hoped that this project can be an example for other industries to follow in the same footsteps. The Ministry of Industry also opens opportunities for cooperation with other stakeholders to achieve the NZE target by 2050.

"The pilot project we run at PT Petrokimia Gresik is a very important first step. We hope that CCU technology can be implemented widely."

"Not only in the petrochemical sector, but also in other sectors that produce high carbon emissions," said Secretary General of the Ministry of Industry, Eko S. A. Cahyanto, as quoted from his official statement, Monday, January 27, 2025.

Currently, the Ministry of Industry is preparing a special policy aimed at facilitating the application of low-carbon technology and supporting the implementation of the circular economy concept in the industrial sector.

This policy will provide guidance for companies in reducing their carbon footprint while increasing competitiveness in the global market.

The application of the concept of net production, energy efficiency, and industrial symbiosis in industrial estates is also part of the decarbonization strategy implemented by the Ministry of Industry.

In industrial areas, companies can collaborate with each other to take advantage of the byproducts of their respective production processes so as to create an industrial ecosystem that is more efficient and environmentally friendly.

This step aims to build a sustainable industrial ecosystem, where each production activity is not only economically beneficial, but also contributes to environmental sustainability.

This pilot project is expected to not only succeed in reducing carbon dioxide emissions, but also accelerate the transformation towards a more sustainable green industry in Indonesia.
