Angry At Colombia, Trump Will Increase Import Tariffs By 50 Percent To Revoke Official Visa
JAKARTA - US President Donald Trump will take massive retaliatory measures against Colombia, including import rates and sanctions, after the South American country rejected two US military aircraft carrying deported migrants.
Colombia, the third-largest US trading partner in Latin America, responded quickly by threatening a 50 percent tariff on US goods.
The country's left-wing president, Gustavo Petro, directed his trade minister to increase US import rates by 25 percent.
Colombia is the second Latin American country to reject US military deportation flights.
Trump's punitive actions demonstrate a stronger US foreign policy and his new willingness to force countries to comply with his wishes.
Trump wrote on Truth Social that Petro's refusal to accept the flight jeopardized US national security.
The retaliatory measures include implementing a 25 percent tariff on all Colombian goods entering the US, which will rise to 50 percent in one week; travel bans and visa lifting for Colombian government officials; and emergency sanctions in treasury, banking and finance.
Trump said he would also direct increased border checks on Colombian citizens and cargo.
"These steps are just the beginning," he wrote.
"We will not allow the Colombian government to violate its legal obligations in connection with the receipt and return of the violators they forced into the United States," Trump added.
He then posted a photo of himself on Truth Social with a line suit and a fedora in front of the board that reads FAFO, a common acronym for "Fuck Around and Find Out".
America will no longer be lied to or used, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a separate statement.
Colombian President Petro is said to have allowed deported migrant flights, but later canceled his permits when the planes were airborne.
