YOGYAKARTA - The Yogyakarta City Government will immediately hold a trial on the spot for violators of the Non-Smoking Area (KTR) rules in the Malioboro area starting in the first half of 2025.
"We are scheduled to hold a trial in this semester related to the violation of the KTR," said the Head of Enforcement of the Yogyakarta City Satpol PP Law when contacted in Yogyakarta, Antara, Tuesday, January 21.
Dodi explained that the trial at the venue will be centered at certain locations in the Malioboro area involving district courts, public prosecutors, and the police in the city of Yogyakarta.
In accordance with Regional Regulation (Perda) Number 2 of 2017 concerning KTR, local residents and tourists caught smoking carelessly in the Malioboro area are threatened with a maximum fine of IDR 7.5 million.
According to Dodi, the judge will decide sanctions based on the Regional Regulation, both in the form of fines and imprisonment if the fine is not paid.
"There is also a threat of punishment if, for example, the fine is not paid. The problem with the fine will be the judge's decision," he said.
However, he admits that until now law enforcement efforts still focus on coaching through verbal and written warnings.
From the beginning of January 20, 2025, the Yogyakarta City Satpol PP still found as many as 200 people smoking carelessly in the shopping tourism center area in Gudeg City and all of them had been subject to sanctions in the form of verbal and written warnings.
"Of the total 200 violators, 187 were tourists outside the region, while 13 were local residents," he said.
Dodi emphasized that tourists and local residents would be treated equally in enforcing the regulation, including when judicial sanctions in the form of a maximum fine of IDR 7.5 million were officially applied.
