BMKG Remembers The Potential For Heavy Rain And Lightning In Several Big Cities Today
JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts that light to heavy rain accompanied by lightning will flush the majority of major cities in Indonesia on Tuesday, January 21. All parties are asked to be aware of the potential impact of this extreme weather.
BMKG forecaster Andika Hapsari explained that light rain (less than 2.5 mm per hour) is expected to fall in a number of big cities such as Pekanbaru, Tanjung Pinang, Bengkulu, Jakarta, Serang, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Mataram, Tanjung Selor, Banjarmasin, Manado, Ternate, Ambon, Manokwari, and Jayapura.
Meanwhile, moderate-intensity rain (more than 4.0 mm per hour) is expected to occur in Semarang, Makassar, Palu, and Sorong. On the other hand, heavy rain (more than 50 mm per hour) is predicted to flush Nabire City.
Other cities such as Padang, Bandar Lampung, Denpasar, Kupang, Pontianak, Palangka Raya, Samarinda, Mamuju, Kendari, and Merauke are also expected to experience rain accompanied by lightning.
In several cities such as Banda Aceh, Medan, Jambi, Palembang, Bandung, and Gorontalo, BMKG estimates cloudy or foggy conditions throughout the day with temperatures ranging from 24-31°C.
Andika Hapsari explained that atmospheric dynamics, including the presence of cyclonic circulation in the western waters of Aceh and the Karimata-Laut Strait of Timor, are factors that affect the potential for rain in these areas.
This cyclonic circulation causes a slowdown in the wind, which has the potential to increase the growth of rain clouds and cause high sea waves along the area.
