Phil Foden Admits Manchester City's Game Against Ipswich Is The Best This Season

JAKARTA - Phil Foden contributed greatly to Manchester City's victory over Ipswich Town 6-0 at Portman Road on Sunday, January 19, 2025.

He scored two goals and created one assist in an outstanding performance in the first half.

The victory brought The Citizens back to the top four of the Premier League with 38 points from 22 matches that have been played.

They are ahead on goal difference over Newcastle United who also have similar points. The Citizens are currently 12 points behind leaders Liverpool, who still have one game more, and six points behind Arsenal and Nottingham Forest.

Ipswich actually performed well at the start of the match with several chances. However, once Manchester City gets out of pressure and controls the ball, there is no more chance for the hosts.

Pep Guardiola's team performed an incredible attacking game. Foden then opened the tap in the 27th minute.

Foden did not hesitate about how well his team played in defeating Ipswich.

"Maybe the best of the season, in terms of a thorough game. Keep possession at important times and we stay well."

"One of our best performances of the year. We are building momentum, maintaining player fitness is important."

"I consider it because people are in better condition and the team is becoming more compact," Foden told Sky Sports.

Despite seeing Manchester City's best performance this season, Foden doesn't want to be big-headed.

He didn't want to see how Liverpool are at the top of the standings. The most important thing now is to defend the Champions League zone.

"You never know what could happen. The goal is to stay in the top four," said the 24-year-old.

This is in line with what Guardiola said in a press conference after the match.

The Manchester City coach said that the most important thing was that his team returned to old form.

"We are very happy, we are back to doing things that have been the hallmark of this team for the last 10 years."

"Very happy with the three points and qualify for next season's Champions League," Guardiola told Sky Sports after the game.

After some inconclusive attempts before Christmas, Manchester City finally found their rhythm against Ipswich.

Guardiola was also impressed by the way his team played.

"A lot better, maybe not the best, but closer to the consistency we have in our game."

"Everyone who owns a smart ball, faster, more agile, everyone is related to each other. You can't be quick, wise, and good if you're not connected defensively," said Guardiola.

Trio Jeremy Doku, Kevin De Bruyne, and Foden tortured Ipswich Town's defense so much. After the goal was scored, Manchester City's goal tap fell heavily.

Mateo Kovacic doubled the lead before Foden scored his second to close the first half with a score of 3-0.

Doku then entered the scoreboard when the second half had only been running for four minutes. He then created Manchester City's fifth goal through Erling Haaland in the 57th minute before the goal party closed by substitute James McAtee in the 69th minute.
