HMPV Virus Doesn't Need To Be Feared, Deputy Minister Of Health: Can Recover 3-5 Days
MEDAN - Deputy Minister of Health (Wamenkes) Dante Saksono Harbuwono revealed that the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) virus has been detected in Indonesia since 2001. This virus, according to him, is harmless and different from Covid-19 which has a high death rate.
"HMPV is not to be afraid of. This virus has been around since 2001 and has usually increased in winter. I have even recently treated HMPV patients who recovered within 3 to 5 days," said Dante after attending the groundbreaking of the Oncology Center Building at Haji Adam Malik Hospital, Medan, Thursday, January 16.
Dante explained that HMPV is more at risk of attacking children, the elderly, and individuals with a weak immune system, such as people with HIV. However, this virus does not cause severe inflammation or inflammation such as Covid-19.
"If Covid-19 causes inflammation and inflammation that triggers death, this HMPV is more like an ordinary flu that only infects the respiratory tract," he explained.
The government continues to evaluate through Influence-Like Illness (ILI) monitoring to detect potential spike in cases. Until now, there has been no significant increase in ILI cases in Indonesia.

"All of Indonesia has not increased ILI. So there is no serious status or pandemic for HMPV," added Dante.
Even though the HMPV virus is not deadly, people are still advised to maintain health protocols, especially when doing activities outside the home.
