Mataram City Government Initiates Electric Public Transportation To Overcome Congestion

MATARAM - The Mataram City Government, West Nusa Tenggara Province, is designing the development of electricity-based public transportation as a solution to overcome congestion during peak hours, as well as support the use of clean energy in its area.

The Mayor of Mataram, Mohan Roliskana, said that the plan to use electric vehicles for public transportation is expected to be a more efficient solution.

"We will propose this to the relevant ministries and institutions," Mohan said, as quoted by ANTARA on Friday, January 17.

This idea came after the Mayor Mohan met with the elected Governor of NTB, Lalu Muhamad Iqbal, recently. During the meeting, the Mayor explained that although the Mataram City Government had tried to improve the public transportation system, various obstacles, such as high operational costs and mismatch in vehicle size with road infrastructure, were still obstacles.

"The current transportation facilities do not match regional conditions. The size of the vehicles that are too large does not match the limited road, which causes traffic jams, especially at certain hours, such as when children are waiting for school transportation," explained Mohan.

To overcome this problem, the Mataram City Government plans to use vehicles with a smaller capacity and electricity-based capacity, according to the advice of the elected NTB Governor. It is hoped that this plan will reduce congestion as well as be more environmentally friendly.

The elected NTB Governor stated that he was ready to support the Mataram City government in realizing this program. "Further discussions regarding types of public transportation, whether for students or the public, will be carried out to determine the right steps," he said.
