Heavy Rain Flows In Singapore, Several Locations Submerged By Floods

JAKARTA - Flash floods hit a number of areas in Singapore due to heavy rains falling across the country, Saturday, April 17.

The national water agency PUB said it had issued flood risk warnings for more than 20 locations, including Sime Darby Center, Bukit Timah Canal (Leng Kwang Baptist Church), Kanal Ulu Pandan and Sungei Pandan Kechil (NUS and AYE).

PUB, through its Facebook account, as reported by CNA, said the floods affected traffic in flooded areas.

"Floods were observed to occur on pedestrian walkways along Jalan Dunearn near Sime Darby Center, as well as Park Linkages along Ulu Pandan Canal, due to high water levels in adjacent waterways and canals," PUB wrote.

PUB explained, prolonged heavy rain fell in many areas in Singapore in the afternoon, with water levels exceeding 90 percent capacity in several waterways and canals.

The biggest rainfall of 161.4mm was recorded in western Singapore from 12.25 to 15:25, PUB said. The high rainfall is the cause of the flooding that occurred today.

"This amount corresponds to 91 percent of the average monthly rainfall in Singapore in April, and is in the top 0.5 percent of the maximum daily rainfall record since 1981," explained PUB.

PUB added that a quick response team was deployed to the affected locations to assist drivers and pedestrians.
