TikTok Prepares For Closing In The US On January 19
JAKARTA TikTok plans to close its app for users in the US on Sunday, January 19, when the federal ban on social media apps could come into effect, unless the US Supreme Court moves to block it.
If TikTok closes its app for all users in the US, the results will be different from those mandated by law. The law will only ban new TikTok downloads in Apple and Google app stores, while existing users can continue to use the app for some time.
According to TikTok's plan, people who are trying to open the app will see pop-ups messages that direct them to websites with information about the ban. TikTok also plans to provide users with the option to download all their data so they can store their personal information records.

US President Joe Biden in April last year signed a law requiring ByteDance to sell its assets in the US before January 19, 2025, facing a national ban.
The companies have sought, at least, to delay the implementation of the law, which they say violates the protection of the US Constitution's First Amendment to restrictions on freedom of speech by the government.
TikTok said in a court filing last month that it expects a third of the 170 million Americans using its apps to stop accessing the platform if the ban lasts for a month.
