Meta Will Lay Off Thousands Of Workers To Increase Performance Standards

JAKARTA Meta, the company that oversees Instagram and Facebook, will stop five percent of employees with the lowest performance. This will be the first layoff (PHK) in 2025.

Meta's spokesman, citing a Reuters report, said Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg had warned his employees of this layoff plan. The Facebook founder believes layoffs are needed to improve the company's performance standards.

As of September last year, Meta had 72,000 workers. If you look at this data, it is likely that the affected employees will reach 3,600 people. It is not yet known when Meta will announce employees affected by layoffs.

After cutting the number of employees, the parent Facebook company will recruit new employees to fill the affected positions. The Meta spokesperson did not explain how many vacancies they would open.

However, given the current situation, Meta may only open half or even far less of the number of employees cut. Apparently, Zuckerberg's plan to cut and recruit was initiated.

The news of this layoff is not so surprising because Meta often cuts the number of employees. In 2022, the company cut 11,000 employees on the grounds of restructuring. The following year, Meta cut more than 10,000 employees.

When doing layoffs two years ago, Zuckerberg said that this action was part of a 'year of efficiency'. Although in 2024 it looks safe, Zuckerberg again cut his employees with the aim of optimizing the company.

This year's layoffs may be based on Meta's plan to focus on the Artificial Intelligence (AI) model. This technology requires large funds and its spending is predicted to increase every year. If you lay off, Meta funds can be saved a little.
