10 Thousand People Running 10 Thousand Steps To Fight Osteoporosis
JAKARTA - 2 out of 5 Indonesians are at risk of developing osteoporosis which can weaken and fracture their bones so that they are more at risk of breaking.
Based on free bone scans from AnleneTM during January-December 2024, around 50 percent (67,547) of approximately 150,000 participants showed the risk of moderate to high osteoporosis.
From the results of these scans, participants in this category have a low bone density rate of <-1.0 and are classified as osteopenia which can continue to be osteoporis if not handled properly.
Therefore, Fonterra Brands Indonesia through AnleneTM collaborates with the Indonesian Osteporosis Association (PEROSI) and the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes RI) to increase public awareness about the prevention of osteoporosis and launch 10 Thousand Steps Streets at the GBK Southeast Plaza. This activity was attended by 10 thousand residents who walked 10 thousand steps in order to maintain bone health.
Osteoporosis is a chronic health problem. In Asia, it is estimated that 50 percent of cervical fracture events will be caused by osteoporism in 2050. In addition, as many as 63 percent of the elderly will experience a decrease in activity due to this disease so prevention is an important priority that must be echoed.
Osteoporosis does not only have an impact on physical health alone, but also the quality of life as a whole. This condition can reduce mobility, cause pain, and eliminate a person's independence. The inability to move freely can also affect self-confidence, create feelings of helplessness, and even stress. Therefore, prevention from an early age is very important so that people can stay active and enjoy life with full freedom.
President Director, Fonterra Brands Indonesia, Yauwanan Wigneswaran said, AnleneTM is a pioneer in bone health for decades and has always consistently inspired the Indonesian people to stay active and healthy until the elderly.
"Since it started in 2007, today we have echoed the enthusiasm to prevent osteoporosis. This activity was attended by 10 thousand Jakarta people, together with our strategic partners, namely PEROSI and the Indonesian Ministry of Health. We invite the Indonesian people to always prepare themselves by maintaining bone health from an early age so that they can freely move at every stage of life," he said, in a written statement, Sunday, January 12.
Chairman of the Indonesian Osteoporosis Association (PEROSI), Dr. dr. dr.men Z. Tamin, Sp.KFR, MS(K), FIPM(USG) said, osteopenia occurs because the resorting process is more dominant than bone formation, causing microartectural damage to the bones.
"Several factors such as old age, estrogen reduction, and lack of physical activity can boost imbalance which ultimately increases the risk of osteoporosis. Walking 10,000 steps is highly recommended to maintain bone density and slow down the process of decreasing bone mass," he explained.
Director of Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (P2PTM) of the Indonesian Ministry of Health, Dr. Siti Nadia Tarmizi, M.Epid emphasized the importance of prevention and early detection.
"Osteoporosis is often undetected until bone damage occurs, which requires long-term care and provides economic and social burdens for families who care. Osteoporosis can actually be prevented from an early age through a healthy lifestyle, adequate nutrition, regular physical activity, and routine examinations. Together, we need to maintain bone health for the Indonesian people," he said.
