Manchester United Activates Harry Maguire's Contract Extension Clause Amid Lack Of Leaders

Ruben Amoram acknowledged that the Manchester United squad lacked leaders ahead of a tough trip to Liverpool on Sunday, January 5, 2025.

He stated that that that was one of the reasons the club decided to activate the option of extending Harry Maguire's one-year contract.

Amoram revealed at his press conference Friday, January 3, 2024, that Maguire's contract, which expires this summer, has been extended to June 2026.

The Portuguese coach said he needed the defender to improve his ability as a leader because the Red Devils did not have many leaders.

"Ruben has confirmed that the one-year option on Harry Maguire's contract will be implemented," the club said in an official Instagram statement.

Manchester United will travel to Liverpool after four consecutive defeats in all competitions, three of them in a row in the Premier League, and without a win at Anfield since 2016.

"We will activate our options. I spoke to him this morning. I told him he had to increase his game on the pitch."

"We really need him. He also has to improve his ability as a leader."

"When you look at our team, we really need a leader on the pitch. He is a leader."

"He has to improve that ability. He has to improve our game. We are happy to be with him," Amorious said when asked about Maguire's contract situation.

Harry Maguire has made 12 appearances in the Premier League, eight of which are starters.

In total, the defender has packed 16 appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions this season and contributed one goal.

Meanwhile, Manchester United will have a tough match against Liverpool in the 20th week of the 20th Premier League 2024/2025.

They are currently slumped in 14th position in the standings after losing three consecutive points in the Premier League without scoring a goal.

Fortunately, there are statistics that say that the Red Devils have never lost four consecutive leagues without scoring goals since 1909.

That is, there is a possibility that Amoram forces can rise with victory at Anfield or at least take a point.
