BMKG Asks People To Beware Of High Waves In South Central Java For The Next 3 Days

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) appealed to all marine service users to be aware of high waves that have the potential to occur in the Indian Ocean south of Central Java (Central Java) on January 1-4, 2025.

"The potential for this high wave to be triggered by an increase in wind speed due to the presence of 94S cyclone seeds in the Indian Ocean south of Java. In this case, the wind movement pattern that tends to be in the same direction as high speed has the potential to increase sea wave heights," said Head of the BMKG Technician Group of Meteorological Station Tunggul Wulung Cilacap Teguh Wardoyo as reported by ANTARA, Wednesday, January 1.

He explained that wind patterns in northern Indonesia generally move from the northwest to the sea with wind speeds ranging from 6-25 knots, while in southern Indonesia they generally move from the west-northwest with wind speeds ranging from 6-25 knots.

According to him, the highest wind speed was observed in the North Natuna Sea, Java Sea, and the Pacific Ocean north of Papua.

"Today, January 1, we again issued an early warning of high waves in the Indian Ocean south of Cilacap, the Indian Ocean south of Kebumen, and the Indian Ocean south of Purworejo which is valid until Saturday 4 January at 07.00 WIB, because the wave height in the Indian Ocean south of Central Java has the potential to reach 2.5-4 meters, so it is categorized as high," he said.

In this regard, he appealed to all marine service users to pay attention to the high risk of waves to shipping safety because based on analysis, wind speed reaches 15 knots and wave height reaches 1.25 meters at risk of fishing boats.

Furthermore, if the wind speed reaches 16 knots and the wave height reaches 1.5 meters, it can pose a risk to the barge, and the wind speed reaches 21 knots and the wave height reaches 2.5 meters at risk of the ferry.

"For people who take advantage of the New Year's holiday by traveling on the southern coast of Central Java, they are advised not to play with water or swim on the beach, especially coastal areas that are dealing directly with the Indian Ocean to anticipate things that are not desirable," said Teguh.
