Mount Semeru Eruption Again With An Eruption Height Of 800 Meters

Mount Semeru on the border of Lumajang Regency and Malang, East Java, erupted again with an eruption height of 800 meters above the peak on Tuesday evening.

"There was an eruption of Mount Semeru on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, at 17.41 WIB. The height of the eruption column was observed about 800 meters above the peak, or 4.476 meters above sea level -mdpl-," said Mount Semeru Observation Post Officer Sigit Rian Alfian in a written report reported by ANTARA, Tuesday, December 24.

According to him, the ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity to the southwest, and the eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 21 mm and a duration of 101 seconds.

Based on officers' records, Mount Semeru erupted seven times on December 24, 2024, with the first eruption occurring at 00.09 WIB with an eruption height of 900 meters above the peak.

"Then the next eruption was at 04.44 WIB with an eruptive column height of 900 meters above the peak, at 10.45 WIB the eruption of Mount Semeru was again, but the visual eruption was not observed because it was covered in fog," he said.

Furthermore, the highest mountain on the island of Java erupted again at 13:44 WIB with an eruption column height observed about 700 meters above the peak, then at 15.51 WIB the eruption erupted again with visually not being observed.

At 17.09 WIB, the eruption with a column height of ash was observed to be about 700 meters above the peak and erupted again at 17.41 WIB with an eruption as high as 800 meters above the peak.

He explained that Mount Semeru is still on alert status, so the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) provides a number of recommendations, namely that people are prohibited from carrying out any activity in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan as far as eight kilometers from the summit (the center of the eruption).

"People are also not allowed to move within a radius of three kilometers from the crater/peak of Mount Semeru, because they are prone to the dangers of throwing incandescent stones," he said.

In addition, the public needs to be aware of the potential for hot clouds, lava avalanches, and rain lava along rivers/valleys that originate at the top of Mount Semeru, especially along Besuk Kobokan, Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar, and Besuk Sat, as well as the potential for lava in small rivers that are tributaries from Besuk Kobokan.
