Carolina Marin Refuses To Retire Due To Injury

JAKARTA The women's singles badminton player from Spain, Carolina Marin, has not thought about retiring amid efforts to recover the injury she is currently still undergoing.

The three-time world champion is currently still out of badminton since anterior cruciatum (ACL) ligament injury in the match against He Bing Jiao in the semifinals of the 2024 Paris Olympics in August 2024.

Marin recently confirmed that he was trying to return to compete at the right time. He also plans to target the 2026 European Championship which will be held in Spain.

"When I had a knee injury for the third time, I was sure I would retire. However, after a lot of thinking, I realized that I would be very disappointed if I was forced to retire due to injury," he said, quoted on the BWF website.

This statement was made by Marin at the screening of the documentary film La Lucha Infinita which tells the story of his struggle to return to fitness after suffering an injury in Paris.

Marin said that the European Championships in Spain are a big target so far. However, he didn't want to be too obsessed because he wanted to really recover completely first.

"I would love to compete there, at home (state) me and with all my friends," said the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics gold medalist.

Marin has always been haunted by injuries in his extraordinary career. This 31-year-old badminton player has previously recovered from two ACL injuries, respectively in 2019 and 2021.

"No one is in a hurry, but this rehabilitation is ongoing. The important thing is to build muscles first. I do it step by step," he said.
