Polda Metro Make Sure To Completely Investigate The Malaysian Tourist Extortion Case At DWP 2024

JAKARTA - Polda Metro Jaya is conducting an in-depth investigation regarding the alleged extortion case against tourists from Malaysia that occurred during the 2024 Djakarta Warehouse Project (DWP) event. This incident was widely discussed after a number of tourists claimed to be victims of extortion by unscrupulous persons suspected of being plainclothes.

The Head of Public Relations of the Polda Metro Jaya, Kombes Pol Ade Ary, stated that his party was proactively following up on reports circulating to reveal the truth of the incident.

"We have proactively carried out an in-depth investigation into this information. Since yesterday, the Metro Jaya Police Bidpropam together with the Police Propam Division have carried out an investigation to follow up on existing reports," said Ade Ary, quoted by ANTARA, Friday, December 20, 2024.

Ade Ary emphasized that Polda Metro Jaya is fully committed to eradicating all forms of abuse of authority, including acts of extortion that damage the image of the police and public security.

"Polda Metro Jaya will not be indiscriminate and will not be selective. We do not hesitate to take firm action against anyone involved in illegal acts, including extortion. If violations are found, they will be processed in accordance with the laws and regulations that apply professionally and proportionally," he said.

In addition, he emphasized that Polda Metro Jaya also has a strong commitment to fighting drug abuse and trafficking, including incidents involving tourists who claim to undergo urine tests after being arrested by plainclothes.

Responding to the incident, the organizers of the 2024 Djakarta Warehouse Project issued an official statement through their social media accounts. In the statement, the organizer expressed regret over the incident that befell a number of tourists and confirmed that the incident was out of their control.

"Your safety, welfare and experience are our top priorities. We are actively working with the authorities and relevant agencies to thoroughly investigate this incident, and ensure concrete steps to prevent similar incidents in the future," said DWP management in a statement.

They also conveyed their commitment to continue to improve the safety standards of events to protect all participants and ensure a positive experience for all parties.

This case emerged after a number of Malaysian tourists who attended the 2024 DWP admitted to being victims of extortion by unscrupulous members of the police. The tourists admitted that they were detained by plainclothes and were asked to undergo a urine test for no apparent reason, before being asked for money.

Polda Metro Jaya emphasized that it will continue to investigate this case thoroughly. Ade Ary also appealed to people who have information regarding this incident to report so that the investigation process can run faster and more transparently.

"We are grateful to all those who provide reports and input. This is important to ensure that public trust in the police is maintained," he concluded.
