10 Busiest Flight Routes In The World In 2024, Some From Indonesia
JAKARTA - In 2024, a number of international and domestic flight routes in the world show a tremendous level of activity. This report was released by the global travel industry, Official Airline Guide (OAG) on Tuesday, December 17, 2024.
The world's most populous international flight route in 2024 is the Hong Kong-Taipei route. This route is back to the top position even though its seating capacity is still 15% lower than the pre-pandemic rate.
Seven of the world's ten most populous international routes are in the Asia-Pacific region, although many of these routes have not fully recovered to 2019 capacity. However, two routes in the Middle East have shown significant growth since 2019.
The second most populous route, Cairo-Jeddah, has about 5.5 million available seats, an increase of 62% compared to the 2019 level. The third most populous route, Seoul Incheon-Tokyo Narita, also showed a significant growth of 68% compared to before the pandemic.
John Grant, OAG's lead analyst, explained that several factors led to this growth.
"First, China's international market, which is still slowly recovering, forces airlines to divert their aircraft to other markets. Japan is currently a very popular destination," he said, quoted by VOI from the CNBC website on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.
"In addition, several new airlines have entered the market, including Eastar and Air Japan. And finally, Haneda Airport is almost full, so new capacity must be diverted to Narita,"
The route linking Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, which is the most populous international route in 2023, has now dropped to fourth, with seating capacity 3% lower than the 2019 level.
The Bangkok-Hong Kong route, which is the seventh most populous route, has yet to fully recover, with a capacity still 13% lower than before the pandemic.
The New York-JFK route to London-Heathrow is the only route on the top ten that connects North America and Europe. The seating capacity on this route rose 3% last year, reaching 4 million seats.
