The police revealed the chronology of a tragic case in which a student with the initials SS (15), from West Sumbawa, West Nusa Tenggara, suffered serious burns after being burned by MGS (21) at the Darusy Syahadah Islamic Boarding School (Ponpes), Kedunglengkong Village, Simo District, Boyolali Regency, Central Java. This incident occurred on Monday, December 16 at around 21.00 WIB.
According to the Head of Criminal Investigation Unit of the Boyolali Police, Iptu Joko Purwadi, this case stems from allegations that SS stole a cell phone belonging to another student with the initials E. MGS, who claims to be the older brother of E, came to Darusy Syahadah Islamic Boarding School to ask for an explanation from SS regarding the allegations.
Arriving at the boarding school, MGS asked the boarding school to summon SS. After SS arrived, he was taken to one of the rooms which was then locked by the perpetrator. In the room, the perpetrator interrogated SS on charges of stealing E's cell phone, threatening him.
"The victim continues to deny these allegations. However, the perpetrator is not satisfied with the victim's answer," said Iptu Joko.
The perpetrator, who turned out to be carrying a plastic bottle containing gasoline, poured the liquid into SS's body and then turned on the lighter. The fire immediately grabbed the victim's body, causing serious burns," Joko explained.
SS suffered burns of up to 38 percent on his face, neck, and legs. The victim was immediately rushed to Simo Hospital for intensive care.
From this incident, the police confiscated a number of evidences, a green carpet that caught fire, a blue gas lighter, a plastic bottle used for gasoline and a cream-colored jacket belonging to the perpetrator.
This case is now being handled by the Women and Children Protection Unit (PPA) of the Boyolali Police because the victim is still a minor.
The perpetrators were charged with multiple articles, Articles 187 to 1 and 2 of the Criminal Code concerning Burns, Article 353 paragraph (2) of the Criminal Code concerning Planned Persecution, Article 80 paragraph (2) of Law Number 35 of 2014 concerning Child Protection.
The maximum penalty that can be imposed on the perpetrators is 15 years in prison.
"The perpetrator is neither santri nor caregiver at Darusy Syahadah Islamic Boarding School. He is only a guest, the older brother of one of the students. Currently, the perpetrator has been detained at the Boyolali Police Headquarters for further investigation," said Joko.
The police confirmed that they would handle this case professionally and provide justice for victims.
