Ibu Records Language Introduces Candei That Brings Local Narratives From South Sumatra

JAKARTA - Ibu Records language has again introduced a music group with a local narrative, Candei, which comes from South Sumatra. The group consists of Fram Prasetyo (vocals, guitar), Putra Kusuma (guitar), Fajrin Ramadani (akordeon), Triwibowo S. P. (tulaling), and Syahlan Loebis (percussion).

Towards the turn of the year, Candei launched their first extended play (EP) or self-titled mini album. The album contains five songs, including Titah Raje which was launched earlier in September 2023.

In the five tracks presented, namely Ghimbe, Sendari, Titah Raje, Cerite Baghe, and Tikate Tuwe, Candei consistently presents local colors, by using Malay Besemah for the lyrics.

Fram who wrote the lyrics for the five songs above said, Besemah is a language of the Melayu Besemah tribe which lives in several areas in South Sumatra.

"Initially I wanted to use Indonesian, but my colleagues encouraged me to raise the regional language as an identity. The language of Besemah is my native language," said Fram, through a press release received by VOI, Friday, December 13.

The music formula of Candei is inspired by Batanghari Sembilan, containing a single guitar excerpt with its traditional texture. This tradition is also known as a stretch or stretch, which provides a distinctive color in each of their works.

"The difference with the general cheapness is the theme. Candei's songs are more personal and contemporary, my personal response is restless with politics or traditional life in the village," said the vocalist.

This debut EP was the beginning for Candei to introduce his identity as a music group that carries a local narrative on a wider scene.
