Komnas HAM Handles 2,305 Cases Of Alleged Human Rights Violations Throughout 2024

JAKARTA - Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) Atnike Nova Sigiro said there were 2,305 cases of alleged human rights violations that occurred at home and abroad (LN) throughout 2024.

He revealed, based on Komnas HAM's year-end records, 2,305 cases had been received and handled by Komnas HAM for follow-up.

"A total of 2,050 cases were received by Komnas HAM through the Secretariat General of Komnas HAM in Jakarta," said Atnike during a World Human Rights Day commemoration activity at the Komnas HAM Office, Jakarta, Tuesday, December 10, which was confiscated by Antara.

Furthermore, he said, as many as 255 other cases were received by six Secretariat Generals of Komnas HAM in Aceh, West Sumatra, West Kalimantan, Central Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua Provinces.

Complaints received, he continued, by post/letter, came directly, online, email, proactive, and audience.

"After that, it was distributed to monitoring a total of 709, mediation in the number of 213, given suggestions or other efforts in the number of 682, and 701 complaints in the nature of copies," he said.

Atnike added that in handling complaints, Komnas HAM also responded quickly based on initial information or observations of alleged human rights violations, by issuing a quick response letter or a letter of protection.

This was done based on news or information in the mass media which was suspected to be an incident of human rights violations and/or other verifiable sources.

In addition, he added, the quick response was carried out based on considerations for events that met the criteria such as impacting and potentially widespread, as well as suspected or having caused serious injuries, casualties, and material losses.

In fact, as a form of quick handling, Komnas HAM has issued six quick response letters or protection letters throughout 2024.

Based on Law Number 39 of 1999 concerning Human Rights (UU HAM), case handling is carried out through the function of monitoring, supervision, and investigation, as well as mediation.
