President Yoon Suk-Yeol declared martial law on Tuesday night on charges that the opposition was carrying out activities that could potentially lead to insurgency and jeopardize constitutional stability.
"The military emergency is aimed at eradicating pro-North Korea forces and protecting the constitutional order of freedom," Yoon said in a speech broadcast nationwide.
However, the decision was strongly rejected by parliament. A total of 190 of the 300 members of the National Assembly who attended the emergency meeting chose to cancel the status.
