Hendra Setiawan Retires After Indonesia Masters 2025

JAKARTA Hendra Setiawan officially decided to retire from the badminton world after playing his last match at the Indonesia Masters 2025.

The legend announced the decision via Instagram social media on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, WIB night.

"I've been in the badminton world for 35 years. I think now is the right time to decide that I will end my career as a badminton athlete," he wrote.

The decision to hang up this racket is not surprising at all given the age of the athlete who is now 40 years old.

Previously last September, Hendra had also expressed his retirement plans. At that time he said he was discussing with someone closest to him and would make a decision at the end of this year.

"Indonesia Masters 2025 will be my last tournament. Thank God for being given the opportunity to play so far and all of my dreams in the badminton world have been achieved," the post continued.

During his career, Hendra reached the peak of his achievements when he won a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the men's doubles with his partner at that time the late Markis Kido.

He also achieved many achievements with his current partner Mohammad Ahsan. Both of them were recorded as world champions three times in 2013, 2015, and 2019.

"Thank you to all my partners, especially the late Markis Kido and Ahsan who have fought together," said Hendra.

Hendra also expressed his appreciation to the parent national badminton PBSI, his club Jaya Raya, and all his fans who are so loyal to support his career journey.

"And thank you for coming out big for me. Especially the wife who always supports me in any circumstances. See you at the Indonesia Masters 2025," he concluded.

Indonesia Masters with Super 500 level BWF will take place on 21-26 at Istora Senayan Stadium, Jakarta. Thus it will be an emotional moment of separation.

Hendra has never won this event during his career. Thus, it would be interesting if he closed his career with a title.
