Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries: Revitalization of Pantura Ponds Carried Out Gradually

JAKARTA - Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) Sakti Wahyu Trenggono revealed that the North Java Coast (Pantura) Pond Revitalization program will be carried out in stages.

"KKP itself will revitalize 78 thousand hectares of less productive ponds in four provinces starting from Banten Province to East Java. Revitalization will begin in 2025 and be carried out in stages until 2029," said Trenggono in Karawang, West Java, Antara, Monday, December 2.

He added that one of the commodities that will be cultivated is saline tilapia.

Tilapia is one of the national priority aquaculture commodities that is developed, because it has a high economic value to meet market needs, both domestically and abroad, and supports the national food security program.

Indonesia's tilapia production in 2023 is 1.37 million tons with an average growth of 5.4 percent per year. The production results are used for domestic consumption and export needs.

Indonesia's tilapia exports also experienced an average increase of 6.74 percent. The highest export peak in 2023 was worth 81.77 million US dollars (IDR 1.3 trillion) with an export volume of 11,166 tons of tilapia.

Indonesia's tilapia exports are dominated by fillet products with a contribution of 98.46 percent. The main destination countries for Indonesia's tilapia exports are the United States (59.08 percent), Canada (20.72 percent), and the European Union (8.28 percent).

For information, the BINS Karawang Pond Modeling was built as an initial step in implementing the North Java Coast (Pantura) Pond Revitalization program.

The facilities built to support the BINS Karawang Pond Modeling consist of maintenance plots equipped with e-feeders and IoT monitoring to measure salinity, temperature, DO, pH and ammonia.

In addition, supporting infrastructure was also built such as the main office and control room, maintenance plots (parent pond, nursery pond, and rearing pond), pond guard room, Wastewater Treatment Plant (IPAL), generator room, mini laboratory, feed warehouse, equipment warehouse, and harvest ward.

The BINS Karawang Pond Modeling was inaugurated by the 7th President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo on May 8, 2024. Its construction began in 2023 on an area of ​​84 hectares.
