Legitimate! Australia Officially Bans Children Under The Age Of 16 Using Social Media

JAKARTA Australia has enacted a law banning the use of social media for children under the age of 16. The ban was approved by the majority of Australian Parliament members on November 28.

Even though it has been agreed, this law will be enforced in the next 12 months. This long range of time is given so that all social media companies, be it Instagram, X, or TikTok, can meet the requirements on time.

This new rule will be a tough challenge for social media platforms. If there are children who violate these rules, they will not be punished, neither will the parents of the child. Instead, the platform will receive the punishment.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had said that Parliament had considered the possibility of children still forcing the use of social media. In this case, they will leave their full responsibility to the company.

"We knew some children would find a way out, but we sent a message to social media companies to correct their actions," Anthony said in a statement, quoted by The Verge.

The social media ban for children under the age of 16 is expected to protect children's mental health. Anthony also believes that this rule can help children in Australia enjoy their youth with friends and family.

Even though the rules have been approved, the parliament has not explained what social media needs to comply with these rules. Most likely, social media as big as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok are required to ban children under 16 from using their platforms.
