Orange Light Behind Clouds After Malang Earthquake

JAKARTA - The bright orange light that appeared after the Malang earthquake, Saturday, April 10, was widely discussed because it was shared on social media. But it is certain that the appearance of this light is not related to the 6.1 magnitude Malang earthquake.

"The light that appeared after the Malang earthquake is certainly nothing to do with the earthquake that occurred. There is no connection between the Malang earthquake and the light in the sky at that time," said Head of Earthquake and Tsunami Mitigation BMKG Daryono, Monday, April 12

Daryono explained that earthquakes are tectonic dynamics in the earth caused by the deformation of the Earth's crust.

"So it does not need to be related because it has nothing to do. Colored light is a purely atmospheric phenomenon due to the presence of sunlight hitting the cloud barrier on the thinner part," said Daryono.

The Malang earthquake left 8 people dead, 5 of them in Lumajang Regency and three in Malang. Most of the victims died as a result of being hit by building materials.

In addition, 39 people were injured and 642 houses were severely damaged, 845 houses were moderately damaged, 1,361 houses were lightly damaged and 179 public facilities were damaged.
