The process of coal formation begins with ancient plants, such as large ferns and swampy plants, which lived in cloudy areas during the Carbon period (about 300 million years ago).
When these plants die, they do not fully decompose because of the oxygen-deficient cloudy environment. The remains of these plants form peat layers rich in organic materials. This Peat is the basic ingredient of coal.
Over time, peat layers are buried by sediments such as sand, mud, and other rocks. This deposition process causes pressure on the peat layer, removes water, and increases carbon concentration.
This stage is the beginning of the transformation of peat into young coal known as lignite. Lignit has high water levels and low energy content, but becomes the basis for the formation of higher quality coal.
With increasing time and pressure, the lignite continues to change. Heat from within the earth helps remove volatile substances (such as oxygen and hydrogen), so that carbon content is higher.
At this stage, the lignite turns into sub-bituminus coal and then a Situminus. The baruminus coal has higher carbon content and larger caloric value, so it is often used as the main fuel in power generation and industry.
The last stage of the coal formation process is the administration, which forms under very high pressure and heat. The experiments contain the highest carbon content, low water levels, and the highest energy value compared to other types of coal. Because of its superior quality, the experiment is usually used for certain industrial applications that require high-performance fuels.
