Marquez's Winter Vacation Begins With Shoulder Surgery

JAKARTA - The accident experienced by the Repsol Honda team rider Marc Marquez on the first day of the pre-season test at the Jerez-Angel Nieto Circuit, Monday, November 26, exacerbated the injury to his right shoulder at Sepang in early November. The eight-time world champion will undergo surgery in Barcelona, Spain, this Wednesday.

Last year Marquez suffered a similar injury to his left shoulder which forced the Spaniard to undergo a winter break to recuperate before the start of the new racing season.

"This winter I want to take a vacation and have some quiet time after a great 2019, but it is time to undergo right shoulder surgery," Marquez was quoted as saying on the team's official website on Wednesday.

Last year's injury was tough for Marquez, who had his left shoulder badly damaged, and this time he hopes it won't repeat itself to his right.

"I discussed a lot with the doctors to see the options. Before Motegi I had a problem with my shoulder and then after the accident in Malaysia I had a subluxation," he explained.

Marquez was again subluxed after falling in Jerez so he and doctors agreed to undergo surgery immediately.

Despite being worried about his shoulder injury, Marquez appeared fastest on the second day of pre-season testing at Jerez on Tuesday to take him to second overall after Maverick Vinales (Monster Energy Yamaha).

The pre-season test session at Jerez is the last chance the riders have to ride their bikes before entering the winter break.

Marquez hopes to recover from his injury before participating in the next pre-season test which will be held in Sepang, Malaysia on 7-9 February next year.
