The Same Message Between Puan And Prabowo At The G20 Forum Becomes An Orchestrament Of Indonesia's Commitment To Fight Hunger

JAKARTA - The issue of poverty and hunger is an issue that was both called for by the Chairman of the House of Representatives, Puan Maharani and President Prabowo Subianto, in the G20 international forum. This was considered positive by experts because it showed that the DPR and the Indonesian Government were in one breath.

"The same statement by Puan and Prabowo regarding poverty and hunger in the G20 and P20 forums shows at least Indonesia's diplomacy, which is carried out by the government and parliament in multilateral forums, is getting more and more well terrorized," said International Relations Observer, Anton Aliabbas, Friday, November 22.

As is known, Brazil holds the chairmanship of the G20 this year. Puan conveyed the issue of poverty and hunger in the 10th G20 Parliamentary Speaker's Summit (P20) forum which is part of a series with the G20 Summit, a forum for the government gathering of G20 power countries.

When attending the P20 which is a G20 parliamentary forum in Brazil, South America, Puan highlighted the phenomenon of hunger due to war. He also emphasized the importance of the world struggling to eradicate poverty, fight hunger, and solve the gap.

Anton assessed that Puan's message in front of the leaders of the G20 state parliament was very relevant to the global geopolitical situation.

"The message can also show Indonesia's great concern regarding these two problems and is ready to contribute to fighting this problem," said the Head of the Center for Intermestic and Diplomatic Engagement (CIDE).

In addition, Puan's move to mention poverty is considered to be interpreted as a reminder that the threat of poverty and hunger cannot only be overcome by developing countries considering that developing countries are quite threatened with this phenomenon.

When Puan raised the issue of hunger in front of the forums of big economic forces, according to Anton, this indicates Indonesia's great vision, namely commitment to a healthier, more prosperous and sustainable future which is one of the targets of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

"In other words, effective global collaboration will be able to accelerate the achievement of the SDGs targets," said Anton.

Furthermore, the Lecturer at Paramadina University said that the orchestration in the implementation of diplomacy as did Puan and Prabowo was needed for Indonesia in the future. Anton said that the harmony between the DPR and the Government will further add value to Indonesia in the eyes of the world.

"Efforts made by the Government related to path one diplomacy will be stronger because it is implemented by other actors such as parliament," he explained.

To note, President Prabowo at the G20 Summit in Brazil mentioned the issue of hunger, poverty, and world tensions due to the volatile geopolitical conditions. He said there were still 25 percent of children in Indonesia starving every day.

Prabowo also said that for countries such as Indonesia, overcoming poverty and hunger is a vital national interest issue. He believes that one way to alleviate poverty and hunger is through education so that the Indonesian state's budget is prioritized for education so that people get out of the world.

President Prabowo also emphasized that the free nutritious food program, which is his leading program, can solve the problem of hunger in Indonesia.

What Prabowo said was related to Puan's message at the P20 forum where he said the achievement of the SDGs faced a big challenge where geopolitical tensions, hunger, gaps and climate crises were increasing.

In a discussion session at P20, Puan mentioned the issue of 700 million people or equivalent to 8.5 percent of the global population in the world who are still living in extreme poverty. She then encouraged the parliament of G20 members to mobilize financial resources, including from the private sector, to focus on dealing with the development priorities of low- and middle-income countries in dealing with poverty and hunger.

"Many developing countries suffer from a very large debt burden. The commitment to achieve the entire development agenda by 2030 has been damaged by various unfortunate events," said Puan at the P20 forum on Thursday (7/11).

According to Puan, increasing geopolitical tensions and the amount of competition between countries have diverted the world's attention from the poor. Whereas global military spending reached US$ 2.4 trillion in 2023 or equivalent to 2.3% of global GDP.

Meanwhile, in the same period in 2023, official development assistance (ODA) amounted to US$ 223.7 billion or less than 10% of global military spending.

Puan then questioned what would happen if the world could allocate 50% of global military spending or around US$ 1.2 trillion annually until 2030 to help the poor. He said, of course, this would have a big impact.

"We will have a different world, where the world's agenda is free from poverty and hunger can be achieved by 2030," said the first woman to serve as Chair of the DPR RI.

Puan hopes that P20 can make parliament renew its political commitment to sharpen the budget allocation in each country, in order to create a more peaceful and prosperous world. This applies to all, both large and small countries.

"We are all political leaders in our country who can make differences. We can influence governments in our respective countries, including influencing the resolution of disputes and our differences in a peaceful way," said Puan.

As countries with the leading economy, the G20 is said to be able to take bold action in leading by setting an example of improving the world's focus and priorities. At the same time, said Puan, various crises in the world are also demanding mutual attention.

"Therefore, it is up to us whether we want to make peace so that we can alleviate poverty, fight hunger, and solve the gap," said the 8th P20 leader in 2022.
