Pep Guardiola Extends Contract At Manchester City

JAKARTA - Pep Guardiola has reportedly approved a new one-year contract to extend his stay at Manchester City.

Guardiola's current contract is in effect until the end of this season. According to ESPN sources, the 53-year-old coach officially stays at the Etihad in another season.

The decision came after a positive conversation between Guardiola and club officials. The former Barcelona manager is also ready to take over from duty at the Etihad for the 10th season.

Guardiola has become the most successful manager in club history. He brought the club to win 15 major trophies, including six Premier League titles and one Champions League title, since arriving from Bayern Munich in 2016.

Guardiola's future was a question mark. He was always silent when asked questions regarding his tenure at Manchester City.

Manchester City officials also gave a deadline between the November 2024 international break and the beginning of the New Year to make decisions regarding their contracts.

His two previous contract extensions, in 2020 and 2022, were signed in November to avoid speculation about his future extending into the second half.

Meanwhile, before the November 2024 international break, Manchester City experienced a bad period.

The Citizens have lost their last four games in all competitions. However, they are still in second place in the 2024/2025 Premier League standings, five points behind leaders Liverpool.

They will also take part in the FIFA Club World Cup which will begin in the United States in June 2025.

Pep Guardiola's extension of his term of office is not in line with Manchester City's Football Director, Txiki Begiristain. He is a close friend of Guardiola.

Begiristain is confirmed to leave Etihad at the end of this season. He will be replaced by Hugo Viana, who joined Sporting CP.
