Jorge Martin Equals Valentino Rossi's Record After 23 Years

JAKARTA Jorge Martin managed to match Valentino Rossi's record who lasted 23 years after he made sure he came out as the 2024 MotoGP world champion.

Martin won the title of this season even though he finished third in the last series race which took place at the Catalunya Circuit, Barcelona, Spain, on Sunday, November 17, 2024, WIB night.

The Spaniard won the title for an independent or non-factories team with Prima Pramac Racing. The record matched the achievements that Rossi had made.

Rossi previously recorded himself as a champion with a non-factories team in 2001, the last year of the 500cc Grand Prix racing era.

At that time, the Italian MotoGP legend nicknamed The Doctor won the world title for the Nastro Azzuro Honda team on a NSR500 motorbike as the factory spectrum.

In addition to equalizing Valentino Rossi's achievements, Martin also became the first world champion in the MotoGP era (2002-current) to successfully do so with a satellite team.

Just like Rossi, Martin won using a manufacturer in the Pramac team with the Ducati Desmosedici GP24 whose specifications were the same as Francesco Bagnaia of the Ducati Lenovo factory team.

The third position finish at Barcelona made Martin have a total of 508 points. The runner-up for the 2023 season is 10 points ahead of rivals and defending champion Francesco Bagnaia.

Martin won a total of nine race wins on his way to the 2024 MotoGP title. The details consisted of three Grand Prix wins and six Sprint Race wins.

The number of Martin's victories in this season's Grand Prix is actually three times less than Bagnaia, which recorded a total of 11 wins.

However, the real key for Martin to win the world title is his success rate on the podium. Of the 40 races, Martin took the podium 32 times or the equivalent of 80 percent.
