Congratulations, UI Confirms Prof. Luthfiralda Becomes Professor Of Biodiversity
DEPOK - University of Indonesia (UI) officially inaugurated Prof. Dr. Luthfirolda Sjahfirdi, M. Biomed as a Permanent Professor of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) in the field of Biology, Thursday 13 November. The procession, which took place at the UI Convention Center, Depok, was chaired directly by the Chancellor of UI, Prof. Ari Kuncoro, S.E., MA, Ph.D.
Prof. Luthfiralda's scientific oration carries an urgent message that slaps awareness: our biodiversity is at a critical point. In his oration entitled "Servational Efforts in Maintaining the Sustainability of Biodiversity at the Rate of Species, Especially Endemic Endangered Species: Case Study at Ex Situ Conservation Institute," Prof. Luthfiralda described a serious threat to species' sustainability, especially the endemic one. He called the decline in biodiversity a time bomb whose impact extends from ecosystem to human life.
Biodiversity is the diversity of life on earth, covering various species of animals, plants, and microorganisms, as well as the relationship between them in the ecosystem. For example, rainforests filled with endemic species, such as orangutans in Kalimantan, are a form of biodiversity that only exists in Indonesia. The more diverse species and ecosystems, the healthier our nature. But unfortunately, many species are now threatened with extinction due to human actions.
According to Prof. Luthfiralda, habitat loss due to land conversion, poaching, and trade in protected animals is the main cause of this crisis. Not only that, the increasingly uncontrollable natural phenomenon also accelerates the rate of species extinction. Threats are real. Our endemic species, Indonesia's greatest wealth, are on the brink," said Prof. Luthfiralda in a serious tone.
However, it does not only offer alarms. He also described concrete solutions. One of them is ex situ conservation methods species protection measures taken outside of their natural habitat. This approach, although not without challenges, offers hope for species that are nearing extinction.
In his presentation, Prof. Luthfiralda explained three important aspects of ex-situ conservation methods.

Ex situ conservation institutions are the main key to the recovery of species populations. He highlighted the importance of progressive management in this institution, although it is recognized that natural adaptation of species is often induced. We must combine human expertise with a measurable conservation system to achieve optimal results," said the wife of the President Director of Garuda Indonesia, Irfan Setiaputra.
He also emphasized the importance of preparation before releasing species into natural habitats. The released species must meet certain standards, ranging from health to adaptability. Release cannot be done carelessly. Failure here will only worsen the condition of the species itself,' he explained.
Prof. Luthfiralda highlighted the importance of cross-sectoral collaboration. Researchers, conservation institutions, and society must work hand in hand in this mission. Conservation will not succeed if only done by one party. Collective awareness is the key to success," he added.
