2024 Election Review, PDIP Junimart Politicians Suggest The President Issue Perppu

JAKARTA - Vice Chairman of Commission II of the House of Representatives Junimart Girsang reiterated the recommendation to review the timing of the 2024 regional elections.

According to him, for such changes, there is no need to revise the Election Law. However, it is enough to issue a Replacement Government Regulation (Perppu).

After a discussion between The Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian and President Jokowi accompanied by election organizers such as KPU, Bawaslu, and DKPP.

"What should I do? The revision of the Electoral Law has been dropped or suspended. My advice, so that the Ministry of Trade as a representative of the government together with the election organizers met with the president to make a Perppu solve this solution. Not the Revised Election Law", Junimart said met VOI in the House of Representatives, Thursday, April 8.

Furthermore, the PDIP politician explained that the issue only concerns the special stages of elections.

Where, in Article 201 Paragraph (8) law No. 10 of 2016 concerning Local Elections mentioned national simultaneous voting in the election of governors/deputies, regents/deputies, and mayors/deputies throughout the territory of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia held in November 2024.

Article 201 Paragraph 9 of the Election Law states that to fill the vacancy of governor/deputy, regent/deputy, and mayor/deputy who ends his/her term in 2022 as referred to in Paragraph (3) and whose term ends in 2023 as referred to in Paragraph (5), appointed acting governor, acting regent, and acting mayor until the election of governor/deputy, regent/deputy, and mayor/deputy through national concurrent elections in 2024.

"If the calculation in November 2024 whether it has been thought when the determination. What if there is a PHP election dispute? Then later to 2025, this will interfere with the period", explained Junimart.

Therefore, he suggested that the government issue a Perppu to make the Simultaneous Elections can run smoothly." And there are no complaints from others," he said.

Previously, Junimart explained that the Evaluation Committee for the Implementation of the 2020 Regional Elections recommended that the KPU review the timing of the 2024 regional elections.

Junimart said the rules for the implementation of the 2024 Local Elections ballot in November will make all election processes expected to be completed in 2025.

That, according to him, if there is a candidate who filed a lawsuit the results of the election to the Constitutional Court (MK), the process is only completed in 2025 so that it will interfere with the period of office of the regional head.

"This will disrupt the periodization (tenure of the regional head) so we ask the KPU to review the stage even though in the Election Law mentioned implemented in November 2024", Junimart was quoted by Antara, Wednesday, April 7.

Junimart said commission II of the House of Representatives suggested that election organizers and the Ministry of Home Affairs meet President Joko Widodo to issue a replacement government regulation (Perppu) to change the timing of the implementation of the 2024 regional elections.
