Flash Floods In Valencia Spain Killed 51 People, Train To Madrid-Barcelona Stopped
JAKARTA - A total of 51 people died in flash floods that hit the Valencia area, Spain. following heavy rains that caused roads and cities to be submerged in water.
The video circulating shows people trapped in the flood, and some of them climb trees so they don't get swept away by the flood.
Carlos Mazon, Valencia's regional leader, said some people were still stuck in inaccessible locations.
"If (emergency services) have not arrived, it is not due to lack of facilities or tendencies, but a problem of access," Mazon said.
Emergency services in the area urge residents to avoid all forms of land travel and follow further developments from official sources.
It was also reported that trains to the cities of Madrid and Barcelona were canceled due to flooding, and schools and other important services were stopped in the worst-affected areas due to flooding.
Footage shared on social media showed firefighters rescuing drivers trapped in heavy rains in the city of Alzira and cars stranded on flooded roads.
An expert UME military unit in rescue operations was deployed in several areas to assist local emergency workers.
The Spanish state weather agency, AEMET, announced a red alert in Valencia, the main orange producing region, with areas such as Tourists and Utiel recording 200 mm of rainfall.
