The Handling Of Serious Stagnant Human Rights Cases, Komnas Proposes To Form A Truth And Reconciliation Commission.

JAKARTA - Komnas HAM Chairman Ahmad Taufan Damanik proposed the formation of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission (KKR) to resolve cases of gross human rights violations. The reason is that objectively many cases can no longer be forwarded to court.

"Because many cases objectively cannot be forwarded to court, it is possible to develop a TRC (Truth and Reconciliation Commission)," said Ahmad during a hearing (RDP) with Commission III of the DPR, Tuesday, April 6.

Ahmad acknowledged that the resolution of cases of gross human rights violations has stagnated.

In fact, he said, Komnas HAM had discussed with President Joko Widodo and the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD. However, there is no mutual agreement.

"In some of these meetings there has been no agreement but we offer to immediately take investigative steps after which Komnas HAM will hand over all decisions to the government, in this case the Attorney General," Ahmad explained.

However, during the discussion, there were several cases of gross human rights violations that could still be resolved judicially, especially for the Papua case.

"Even though Komnas HAM discussions with the president and the government, the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, there are certain issues that have been resolved by Komnas HAM that can be resolved judicially, especially those related to Papua to build people's trust in Papua and internationally," Ahmad explained.
