UN Condemns Israeli Airstrike In Beit Lahiya Gaza That Killed Dozens Of People

JAKARTA - The UN peace envoy for the Middle East on Sunday condemned further attacks on civilians, after Israeli airstrikes in Beit Lahiya, Gaza killed dozens of people on Saturday night.

"This follows weeks of intensive operations that resulted in heavy casualties of civilians and almost no humanitarian aid reaching the population in the north," said UN Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Tor Wennesland.

As many as 87 people were killed or missing under the rubble following the Israeli attack on Saturday in Beit Lahiya, northern Gaza, the health ministry said in the Palestinian enclave on Sunday.

The Israeli military said it was investigating reports of the incident, which caused one of the highest casualties in months.

Gaza's Ministry of Health said the attack had killed hundreds of people since Israel's campaign escalated.

Separately, health authorities confirmed the death toll from Palestine since the latest conflict in Gaza broke out on October 7, 2023, has reached 42,603 people. Meanwhile, about 99,759 other people were injured. The majority of victims were women and children, quoted by WAFA.

Israel's military said it intensified attacks on northern Gaza in early October to prevent Hamas militants from gathering again.
