FA Hopes Thomas Tuchel Can Imitate England Women's National Team Coach Sarina Wiegman

JAKARTA - Head of the English Football Association (FA), Mark Bullingham, said he saw similarities between England's women's team coach Sarina Wiegman and newly appointed male team coach Thomas Tuchel.

Tuchel, who signed an 18-month contract with the England national team on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, is expected to repeat the success that Wiegman brought as a non-English manager.

The Dutch coach led the England women's team to win their first major trophy by lifting their Euro 2022 title at home.

Therefore, Tuchel as a non-English manager can also bring similar success. Nearby, the German coach will face the 2026 World Cup.

Tuchel has certainly been tasked with returning to the World Cup trophy since the last time in 1966.

"I think Sarina will say that she feels set into a team that is ready to win. She instills that confidence in the team."

"I think some of that stems from the fact that he is a proven winner," Bullingham told BBC 5 Live.

"Of course, we see the similarities for it (with Tuchel). That's the most important thing in our minds when looking for a head coach, someone who can really give the team confidence and they have what it takes to win," said Bullingham again.

Tuchel, who will start working on January 1, 2025, said he believed Britain was ready to win another major trophy.

"I think it's just a feel, it's just a detail. If you lose on penalties in the final, I'll say I know what you did wrong when you were there."

"England have been in the two finals (Euro), I think. Semifinals and quarter-finals (World Cup). Each of them lost very, very thinly from that match."

"They can win by any means. A sincere belief is that we (England) are there, that we are ready," Tuchel told a news conference.
