JAKARTA - Zainudin Amali, is the Minister of Youth and Sports for the Advanced Indonesia Cabinet. With a background as a senior politician and a seasoned businessman, he is trusted to lead the younger generation to develop their interests and talents, especially in the field of sports. Who is the real figure of Zainudin Amali?
This politician from the Golongan Karya (Golkar) Party was born in Gorontalo, one of the old cities in the northern part of Sulawesi Island on March 16 59 years ago or in 1962. He is the only child of Mohammad Amali and Maryam Hala.
Udin, as he is usually called, spent his childhood in Buhu Village, Talaga Jaya District, Gorontalo District. The village is located on the shores of Lake Limboto. His father was a religious leader there.
As quoted by the Kompaspedia page, Udin finished his elementary school at State Elementary School (SDN) Buhu which has now changed its name to State Elementary School (SDN) 4 Talaga Jaya, in 1975. He then moved to Manado, North Sulawesi to continue his junior high and high school education.
After graduating from State Senior High School (SMAN) 4 Manado in 1982, Udin moved to Jakarta to study economics at the Swadaya College of Economics (STIE). When he was a student, Zainudin was already active in organizations. He was once the Chairperson of Bakornas, the Islamic Student Press Institute (1986-1987), Chair of the STIE Swadaya Student Senate (1988-1990), and General Chair of the Gema Kosgoro DPP.
He also got a bachelor's degree in economics in 1992 at the age of 30 years. After graduating, he chose a career as an entrepreneur while his passion for organizations remained active in a number of organizations.
Business and political career
During his career as an Entrepreneur, Zainudin has held core positions in several companies. Among others, the Director of PT. Putra Mas, the Commissioner of PT. Wirabuana Dwi Jaya Persada, the Commissioner of PT. Gitrana Sendiko, the Director of PT. Surya Terang Agung, and the Director of PT. Makmur Triagung.
Apart from businessmen, we know Zainudin as a seasoned politician from the banyan party. And his political career began to take off when he was a member of the House of Representatives for four consecutive terms with different electoral districts (Dapil).
Zainudin started his duties as a people's representative from 2004 to 2009 from the electoral districts of Gorontalo Province. Then moved to the Electoral District of East Java for three periods, namely 2009 to 2024.
In the 2019 elections, he won 121,351 votes in Madura and was elected as a member of the House of Representatives for the fourth time. However, he only served less than a month until he was appointed as the Minister of Youth and Sports for the Advanced Indonesia Cabinet.
Meanwhile, in his party where he is a member, Golkar, he is also excellent. In 2013, Zainudin was entrusted by Golkar Party Chairperson Aburizal Bakrie to lead Golkar East Java as Chairman of the Regional Executive Council (DPD).
Political dynamics ensued when Zainudin and 10 members of the House of Representatives (DPR) from Golkar supported the people's direct elections. They are considered to be at odds with the central committee. This resulted in Zainudin being fired from his position as Chairman of the East Java Regional Executive Council (DPD) in October 2014.
Ahead of the Golkar Congress in 2014, Zainudin crossed over to the Agung Laksono team by supporting the Golkar National Conference in Ancol instead of the Bali National Conference held by the Aburizal Bakrie team. In the Ancol National Congress, Zainudin Amali was elected as Secretary-General of Golkar. After the two camps reconciled in 2015, Zainudin became one of the chairmen of the party's DPP.
Before becoming a Golkar functionary, Zainudin was also active in a number of organizations. For example, Deputy Secretary-General of PPK Kosgoro 1957 (2000-2013), Deputy Secretary-General of the Golkar Party Youth Force PP (2002-2004), Chair of the Indonesian Youth Reform DPP (2003-2008), and Chair of PP AMPG (2004-2009). He also assumed the position of Deputy Secretary-General (DPP) REI in 1998-2001.
Achievement highlights
Zainudin's classy career is also supported by the achievements he has made. For example, when he led Gorontalo well, he received several awards. For this reason, in 2007 he was awarded the Limboto Lake Conservation Award for the Conservation Initiative Category.
One of the things that made Zainudin's name stick out was when he voiced a moratorium or temporary suspension of gas exports in July 2012 which was conveyed to the government. As deputy chairman of Commission VII of the House of Representatives (DPR), he feels that pressure on the government is urgently needed.
According to Zainudin, gas is a strategic commodity, so the government should formulate its own policies. Among other things, to regulate the use, distribution, and processing of natural gas clearly and firmly for the sake of thinking about the national interest.
Apart from the gas problem, Zainudin Amali also criticized the industrial system and power plants which are considered to be experiencing a shortage of gas. Domestic gas utilization can also increase industrial competitiveness and support the conversion program from Oil Fuel to Gas Fuel for vehicles. His concern for energy utilization is so high that Zainuddin Amali deserves to be called the pioneer of national energy independence.
Zainudin also strives to push forward regulations to cover activities in the energy and mineral resources sector, environment, and research and technology. As the people's representative, he is recognized as accurately carrying out the duties assigned to him.
