Fire In The Southeast Sulawesi Acid Unit Of PT Freeport Gresik Smelter Successfully Extinguished

The fire that occurred in the sulfate smelter acid unit of PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) in the Gresik Special Economic Zone, East Java, was successfully extinguished.

"Information developments at 20.45 WIB, the fire in the sulfate acid unit of the PT Freeport Indonesia smelter (PTFI) in the Gresik Special Economic Zone was now successfully controlled at 20.45 WIB," said VP Corporate Communications of PT Freeport Indonesia Katri Krisnati, quoted by ANTARA, Monday, October 14.

Katri said all employees were confirmed safe and no injuries were reported.

"The safety of all employees is our top priority," he said.

In addition, the PTFI emergency response team has moved quickly to handle it. In a relatively short time, support from institutions/companies and local governments in Gresik has arrived to help and remain at the location to jointly monitor the situation.

"PTFI will conduct an assessment of the damage that occurred and evaluate the main cause of this incident after the area in this unit is safe to enter," he said.

The fire incident was recorded in a video that then spread to a number of WhatsApp conversation groups.

The 29-second video shows the factory building on fire. The workers, who were still wearing uniforms, were seen staying away from the burning building.

A number of workers also asked their colleagues to immediately move away from the burning building. Not long after, there was a sound of an explosion coming from the burning factory building.
