Experienced A Rare Disease, Sammy Basso Becomes The Longest Progerian Patient To Die

JAKARTA - Sammy Basso, the longest patient from a rare disease progeria died on Sunday, October 6, 2024. He died at the age of 28.

Progeria is a disease that makes a person age rapidly, not according to its age. By suffering from this disease, Sammy ages before his time like a lot of wrinkles of aging on his face.

Citing the Channel News Asia page, Sammy Basso was born in 1995 in Schio, North Italy. He was diagnosed with progeria at the age of two.

As a progerian sufferer, Sammy is an inspirational figure and founder of the Italian Progeria Association with his parents since 2005. He told many of his struggles to live with the disease, one of which was through the documentary National Geographic entitled Sammy's Journey.

Meanwhile, quoted from the official website of the Italian Progeria Association, progeria is a rare disease that attacks 1 person in every 9 million births. At the beginning of its growth, children with progeria will look healthy.

However, at the age of 2 years, they begin to look aging rapidly. The aging experienced by people with progeria is not only in the form of wrinkles on the skin.

People with progeria also experience various health symptoms such as osteoporosis, skin disorders, physical disorders that tend to be weak, to delays in growth and development.

Those with progeria also have a risk of developing a progressive heart disease and other cardiovascular problems. The average life expectancy rate for progerians ranges from 8 to 21 years, but Sammy Basso lives up to 28 years, so it is called the longest prograder sufferer.
