Pertamina International Shipping Pangkas 36 Kiloton CO2

JAKARTA - PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) has succeeded in reducing 36 kilotons equivalent to CO2 (ktCO2e) of carbon emissions in each operational line until August 2024.

PIS Director of Human Resources and Business Support Surya Tri Harto said, in order to achieve the goal of zero emissions, PIS implemented various green innovations to significantly reduce carbon emissions.

Three green technologies have been implemented by PIS, namely Green Ships Technology, Alternative Fuels, and Green Port & Terminal.

The trend in the energy sector and maritime logistics further prioritizes sustainability aspects, both on the business and environmental side. PIS as the parent of Pertamina's Sub Holding Integrated Marine Logistics is committed to significantly reducing carbon emissions by 2030 and reaching zero emissions by 2050. As of August 2024, we managed to reduce 36 kilotons of CO2e, or about 155 percent of the set target," said Surya, Tuesday, October 1.

Surya explained, through Green Ships technology, PIS ships are designed with special environmentally friendly specifications such as the use of a ballistic water treatment system or the Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS) and a scrub installation to manage ship waste, thereby reducing the ecological impact of leaning.

PIS also implements alternative Fuels through Dual Fuel technology that allows conversion of green fuel in increasing consumption efficiency.

Meanwhile, for green Port & Terminal, in improving ground infrastructure, PIS continues to promote the production and use of renewable energy for installations managed through the installation of solar panels at ports and terminals.

To achieve PIS' long-term target of reducing carbon emissions, we realize that the focus cannot only be on reducing emissions from ship assets. We also need to make improvements to supporting facilities, such as support boats, energy terminals, and ports. This commitment is our focus in implementing environmentally friendly technology, increasing operational efficiency, and establishing partnerships with related parties, in order to create sustainable solutions that support our vision of protecting the environment," explained Surya.

Surya ensured that PIS was committed to increasing the contribution of the green business by 34 percent in 2034.

In this effort, PIS will bring in a new ship, namely the Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC), to increase the carrying capacity of green fuels such as LNG, LPG, and ammonia.

The presence of these two ships is expected to strengthen the carrying capacity of low-carbon fuels, both at home and abroad.

In the same forum, Surya emphasized the importance of collaboration between stakeholders and energy industry players to find innovative solutions to achieve the government's zero emission target by 2060.

"The main thing that affects the maritime industry, such as technological advances and environmental challenges, requires industry players and stakeholders to collaborate in finding innovative solutions to balance operational efficiency with environmental responsibility," said Surya.
