Gordon's Penalty Thwarts Man City's Victory Over Newcastle

JAKARTA - Manchester City again failed to win in the English Premier League match. Playing at home to opponents at St James' Park Stadium, Saturday, September 28, 2024 evening WIB, Man City drew 1-1 against Newcastle United. Penalty Anthony Gordon saved Newcastle from defeat at home.

Man City for the second time in a row failed to get three points. In last week's match, Man City, who played in front of supporters, almost fell before finally drawing 2-2 against Arsenal. In that big match, Man City lost after defender John Stones managed to score a goal before the game ended.

The result ended Man City's winning record in domestic competitions. Pep Guardiola's team also failed to move away from the pursuit of their competitors even though they were still perched at the top of the standings.

While playing away games this week, Man City actually hopes to get up. But their efforts failed again because Newcastle managed to force a draw after Gordon's penalty beat goalkeeper Ederson.

The draw made Man City only add one point. However, The Citizens who pocketed point 14 still remained at the top of the standings.

It's just that their position is starting to get threatened. The reason is, Liverpool and Aston Villa, who are only two points adrift, will shift Man City if they win their game.

Meanwhile, Newcastle also failed to improve the rankings. With 11 points, Newcastle is ranked fifth. Same as Arsenal, but The Toon Army lost the goal difference.

In that match, Man City was actually able to take the initiative to attack the Newcastle defense. They are also superior in possession of the ball so that they have the opportunity to score goals.

It's just that the front line of Man City re-independent Erling Haaland completely lost his spur. He had difficulty breaking into the back row of the hosts.

The patience of the Man City players to dismantle the Newcastle defense finally arrived in the 35th minute. Defender Josko Gvardiol was the one who overcome the deadlock when the Premier League champions forward could not penetrate Newcastle's goal.

The goal started with midfielder Jack Grealish releasing an assist to Gvardiol who completed it by breaking into the opponent's goal. This Croatian national team defender succeeded in bringing Man City ahead.

The score changed 1-0 for Man City. No additional goals were created so the draw lasted until the first half was over.

Entering the second half, Man City did not resign. But Newcastle slowly began to rise. The game against Eddie Howe's team was able to trouble the Man City defense.

At its peak, the hosts were awarded a penalty following Ederson's strong foul that brought down the Gordon Referee pointing to the spot and the execution was completed by Gordon himself.

The success of breaking into Man City's goal made Newcastle's players even more enthusiastic about pressing their opponents. Midfielder Sandro Tonali opened up opportunities for Harvey Barnes to score. Only, Ederson made an impressive save that thwarted Barnes' attempt.

Next, Joelinton was thrown in the penalty box. Joelinton actually asked for a penalty. But the referee let the incident happen.

Man City also put pressure on Newcastle's defense. Bernardo Silva got a good chance to welcome Phil Foden's pass. But Silva's volley was saved by goalkeeper Nick Pope.

Pope made another brilliant save at the end of the match. Haaland's header which was supposed to break into Newcastle's goal brilliantly was thwarted by Pope. No goals were scored and the 1-1 score lasted until the end of the match.
