Topan Yagi's Disadvantage In Myanmar Caused 384 People Killed And 89 Missing

JAKARTA - The death toll from floods and landslides caused by the Yagi super typhoon in Myanmar jumped to 384 people and 89 others were declared missing, according to the country's ruling military junta on Saturday (21/9).

The eruption of Typhoon Yagi more than a week ago in Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar caused floods and landslides that destroyed and claimed hundreds of lives in the region.

In a statement, Myanmar's junta said that many areas, including Kayah and Kayin states, were severely affected. Roads, bridges, settlements, and schools were reportedly damaged.

junta leader General Min Aung Hlaing visited the affected areas to oversee rescue, assistance and rehabilitation efforts.

The United Nations estimates that up to 887,000 people in Myanmar are affected by the typhoon.

The UN humanitarian agency reported that the worst-affected areas experienced extraordinary destruction, where settlements, personal goods, water sources, and electrical infrastructure were damaged.
