Humanitarian Law Pressure, Germany Reportedly Stops Temporarily Exporting War Weapons To Israel
JAKARTA - Germany is barred from temporarily suspending exports of new weapons of war to Israel amid humanitarian legal pressure.
Citing Reuters, this was revealed by a source close to the German Ministry of Economics on Thursday 19 September.
According to sources, a temporary suspension due to international legal and political pressures declaring the export of weapons of war to Israel violates humanitarian law.
The German Ministry of Economics said this decision was made carefully. The main factors based on the realization of this decision are international law, foreign policy and security.
However, the ministry said so far there has been no ban on arms exports to Israel.
Responding to the decision, a spokesman for the German government said there was indeed no attempt to boycott German arms exports to Israel.
In 2023, Germany approved the export of weapons to Israel worth 326.5 million euros or 363.5 million US dollars. The export value includes military equipment and weapons of war.
According to data from the German Ministry of Economics, the nominal number of arms exports to Israel from Germany has increased 10 times from 2022.
However, in 2024, arms export approval to Israel has decreased, with only 14.5 million euros awarded from January to August 21.
