Surabaya City Government Starts Revitalization Of Flower Market

SURABAYA - The City Government (Pemkot) of Surabaya, East Java, is launching a revitalization of the Kembang Market, Jalan Pasar Kembang, Wonorejo, Tegalsari, Surabaya, following the market experiencing a fire, Sunday (22/8).

Surabaya Mayor Eri Cahyadi said the revitalization of the Kembang Market was carried out with the support of Bank Jatim's cooperation and is targeted to be completed by the end of December 2024 or early January 2025.

"Hopefully the revitalization of the Flower Market will be completed in December or January. I hope that the Kembang Market can change and become an icon of the City of Surabaya," said Eri Cahyadi as quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, September 11.

He said that apart from spending Rp4 billion in budget support from Bank Jatim, Surabaya Mayor Eri Cahyadi also asked PD Pasar Surya to use IDR 22 billion in capital participation from the Surabaya City Government for the development of the Kembang Market.

"So I ask friends of PD Pasar Surya, other points are also built using capital participation money from the Surabaya City Government. Because the city government has provided capital participation since March 2024," he said.

The revitalization of the Kembang Market can only be carried out in 2024 because during the fire incident in 2021, the Surabaya City Government budget was focused on handling COVID-19.

"In 2021-2022, the budget for handling COVID-19 will be budgeted, so there will be no development during those times. So, in 2024 we will build it, and at the beginning of the year we will provide capital participation," he said.

Director of Micro, Retail and Medium Enterprises of Bank JatimArief Wicaksono expressed his support for the revitalization and development of the Kembang Market because it has become an icon of the market hawker center in Surabaya.

"We hope that later with the revitalization of the Flower Market, all ecosystems in this market will be more comfortable. Because they get a better and more adequate place," said Arief Wicaksono.

He said, after the revitalization in the future, all ecosystems in the Kembang Market began using non-cash transactions, one of which could be through QRIS or J-Connect Bank Jatim.

"We also hope that the transaction will progress, it will be cashless, it will be non-cash. Hopefully this revitalization will run smoothly and quickly," he said.

President Director of PD Pasar Surya Surabaya Agus Priyo explained that the concept of revitalization will still refer to existing existing markets. It's just that later what will be updated is transactions using cashless.

"Then the new ones will also be related to the market layout that is clean, orderly, not slum and more modern," he said.

Currently, there are around 242 traders who specialize in selling market snacks at the second floor booth of the Flower Market and on the first floor, there are around 283 traders.

"With the addition of new traders around 50-70 traders on the top floor, if you add up, it will be around 300 traders," he said.
