Razer Not Yet 'Hanging' Mobile Gaming Business

JAKARTA - The prolonged COVID-19 pandemic has made Razer decide to stop developing the latest generation of gaming smartphones. Razer also plays a strategy to focus on selling gaming accessories.

"Indeed, our mobile phone segment has been one of the most heavily impacted. So we have to encourage the development team to shift to our fast growing peripheral business movement," said Razer Fintech's chief strategy and CEO, Li Meng Lee during an online discussion, Wednesday, 24 March.

"Even so, we continue to maintain our relationships with several suppliers (chipset vendors) out there," he added.

Despite the absence of Razer Phone 3. Lee said that 2020 is not the right time to sell a gaming smartphone.

In Razer's eyes, they see a decline in demand for gaming phones that are still 4G-based. So that his party has to set a new strategy to implement new technology for the gaming peripherals segment.

"Last year when we started talking about the mobile gaming business was less than satisfactory. However, we see that the mobile gaming peripherals segment is still a big market for monetizing our services. So actually, we only took a few moments to develop our hardware (Razer Phone), "he explained.

Reflecting on Lee's expression, the Razer Phone 3 may not be released at least until 2022. Even so, Razer remains one of the pioneers in the presence of smartphone gaming on the market today.

"Apart from that, there are no short-term intentions around it, but you know, I think at the right time we decided to tell everyone," he concluded.
