Ni Nengah Widiasih was born in Karangasem, Bali, on December 12, 1992. The woman who is currently 32 years old is known as a powerlifting athlete or weightlifting from Indonesia, precisely from Bali Province.
Ni Nengah Widiasih is the daughter of I Gede Gambar's father and Ni Luh Baning's mother. Widi was born into a family who already knew the world of weightlifting. His older brother named I Gede Suantaka is a powerlifting athlete.
Despite undergoing all his activities in a wheelchair due to paralysis in his two legs since childhood, this condition did not prevent Widi. He can still be a weightlifter and make Indonesia proud.
Born in good health, but when he was about three years old, Widi contracted polio. This condition makes his feet not develop perfectly and have to wear a wheelchair.
This situation had made the woman who grew up in Karangasem not confident and often cried. Even so, In his parents continue to give encouragement. When he was in sixth grade in elementary school, he lived in a dormitory managed by the Defect Children Development Foundation.
However, all his daily expenses were borne by the foundation, and when he attended secondary school, his education was financed through scholarships.
According to Paralympic's official website, Ni Nengah Widiasih began to get to know powerlifting in 2006 thanks to the influence of her older brother. With the encouragement of her brother, who is also a weightlifter, Widi finally studied this sport.
Previously, Widi was active in athletic racing and competed in various championships including the Defect Student Sports Week (Popcat) and the National Student Sports Olympics (O2SN). But then he switched to weightlifting.
As a weight lifter athlete, Widi participated in the 40 kilogram class at the 2006 National Student Para Games in Indonesia. In this competition he won a gold medal.
In 2008, Widi won a bronze medal at the ASEAN Para Games at Nakhon Ratchasima. A year later Widi won a silver medal in a similar event in Kuala Lumpur. Widi also successfully won medals in national competitions in Surakarta and Bali, competing in the 40 kilograms class.
Widi's debut at the Paralympics began in 2012 in London, although at that time he had not managed to bring home a medal. But with an unfaded spirit, he continued to struggle despite injury and had to undergo a strict diet. In the end, Widi managed to get a bronze medal at the 2016 Paralympics.
After the 2016 Paralympics, Widi again suffered an injury to his right shoulder. Even so, he got up and won a gold medal at the 2017 ASEAN Para Games, silver at the 2018 Asian Para Games, and silver at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.
In addition to winning silver in Tokyo, Widi also broke his own record by lifting a load of 98 kilograms, surpassing the previous lift which was only 97 kilograms at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Para Games. According to the Kemenpora website, Widi also managed to break the record at the 2022 ASEAN Para Games Solo.
In 2024, Widi again competed in the Paris Paralympics which was held at the Porte de la Chapelle Arena. In the event, he lifted a weight of 101 kilograms in the 41 kilograms class, which became the toughest lift of his career.
