Paetongtarn, Thaksin Shinawatra's Elected Son, Becomes The Prime Minister Of Thailand

JAKARTA - The Thai Parliament elected the woman political figure Paetongtarn Shinawatra as the youngest prime minister.

Thaksin Shinawatra's 37-year-old daughter, won the vote in parliament, Friday, August 16. She now faces a big challenge, just two days after her ally, Srettha Thavisin, was dismissed as prime minister by the judiciary.

At stake for Paetongtarn is the legacy and political future of the billionaire Shinawatra family, once an unstoppable populist giant and suffering from his first election defeat in more than two decades last year.

Paetongtarn will be the second female prime minister in Thailand and third Shinawatra to hold the highest post after her aunt Yingluck Shinawatra, and her father Thaksin.

Paetongtarn won easily with 319 votes, or almost two-thirds of the vote. He was not present in parliament and watched the vote from the headquarters of the Pheu Thai Party.

His first public comment on the win was posting on Instagram a photo of his lunch. "The first food after listening to the vote," Paetongtarn wrote.

Paetongtarn has never served in government and the decision to put him in office is a decisive decision for his Pheu Thai and its 75-year-old leader, Thaksin.

Paetongtarn will soon face challenges in various fields, with a slumped economy, growing competition from rival parties, and the shrinking popularity of Pheu Thai, having not implemented its main cash assistance program worth 500 billion baht (14.25 billion US dollars).
