Increasingly Used, Local Domain (.id), Ready To Compete In ASEAN

JAKARTA - More than half a million websites already use a domain name (.id). This achievement has made the Indonesian Internet Domain Name Manager (PANDI) believe that Indonesia's local domain can spread throughout Southeast Asia.

Based on data on the growth of website addresses in ASEAN, the Indonesian domain (.id) experienced a significant increase of 37.9 percent in 2020. According to the Deputy for Business Development, Marketing and Cooperation, PANDI Gunawan Tyas Jatmiko (.id) can compete with domain names others in Southeast Asia.

"Currently our competitor who is a tough competitor is Vietnam (.vn) which still occupies the top position as champion in ASEAN. But from the existing statistics, the domain (.id) targets this year to overtake Vietnam and become champion in ASEAN," he said. Gunawan was quoted from his written statement.

PANDI data

Gunawan explained, of the 13 domain names managed by PANDI, the most registrations were (.id) with 193,280, then (.co.id) with 190,943, and (.my.id) with 99,855 domains. This means that the growth of domain names (.id) reached 351 percent, starting from 2012 to 2020.

Gunawan said that reaching half a million users was not easy, it needed the right marketing strategy to encourage it. One of them is by simplifying the requirements for registering domain names in Indonesia.

"There are seven core points that have been the key to success so far, including simplifying the registration requirements for domain names (.id) and (.my.id), then expanding marketing channels at home and abroad," he explained.

In addition, the price of a domain name (.my.id) is the cheapest website address name that can be registered. This effectively has the most significant impact on the growth of Domain names (.id) in Indonesia.

In addition, Gunawan said that currently PANDI is actively collaborating with sales partners to carry out online and offline activities to expand brand awareness of domain names (.id). This includes collaborating with world cultural institutions such as UNESCO, to participate in promoting Indonesia's local domain to the international realm.

"Collaborating with communities outside IT to introduce domain names (.id) so that the distribution is wider. And we have a program of Knitting Indonesia Through the Digitalization of Indonesian Script (MIMDAN) which makes PANDI and its (.id) widely known among the wider community and all stakeholders involved, "he explained.
