Nagabonar Reborn Film Review - A Conflict Of Responsibility And Too Fast Plot

JAKARTA - The figure of Nagabonar is again presented in the film entitled Nagabonar Reborn by Dedi Setiadi. Since it was first filmed in 1987, fans have always been waiting for every series released. What is expected of a remake of a film famous of its day is its quality.

The character of Nagabonar, the clever, brave and funny general who comes from North Sumatra has been very attached to the minds of Indonesian film lovers. The presence of Nagabonar Reborn, of course, will indirectly lead the audience to compare it with the earlier version of the film.

Previously, Nagabonar was identical to Deddy Mizwar. This time, the character in the film is played by Gading Marten. Nagabonar Reborn is different from previous films. Because, it focuses on the main character, starting from personal life, love stories to friendship.

There are various things that were changed for the sake of the film. The Nagabonar character is no longer known as a pickpocket like in the previous two films played by actor Deddy Mizwar. Meanwhile, Nagabonar's personality, who likes to joke, is innocent, is obedient to his mother and loyal to his friends, is still featured in the film. Nagabonar, who loves the country so much, is still highlighted, although sometimes it is vague because it is spiced with romance.

Compared to previous films, the initial 15 minutes are certainly very different. Here, there is a childhood story of a very dramatic Nagabonar. Nagabonar and his childhood friends stole attention when arguing over stolen mangoes. Even though their dialogue seems too slow for a chat with Batak children, the young players' performances are already very good.

As an adult, Nagabonar migrated to Medan in order to have a better life with his mother, played by Rita Matumona. This overseas migration actually made him reunite with childhood friends, Lukman played by Rifky Alhabsyi and Mariam played by Roby Tremonti, then a charming girl named Kirana played by Citra Kirana.

Kirana is not an ordinary girl, she is the lover of Captain Bastian (Delano Daniel), who at that time was sent by the Dutch colonial government to oversee Medan. She is also the daughter of a Dutch henchman doctor (Gusti Randa).

Like a young man drunk by romance in general, the unemployed Nagabonar dreamed of marrying Kirana. Moreover, there were various accidental meetings that seemed to be an opportunity for Nagabonar to approach step by step to his idol.

After becoming the leader of the troops, Nagabonar brought his mother with him to live together in his troop camp. In the same place there is also Kirana, who is a prisoner of war. Fierce fighting took place between the Nagabonar troops and the Dutch because of the division of territorial boundaries.

Nagabonar who looks innocent is often considered not seriously thinking about fighting strategies by Bujang (Ence Bagus). There is the impression that Nagabonar, who suddenly became a general, was only fighting for love. However, it was resolved. The ending of the story is of course the same as the old Nagabonar and that is also the problem with this film.

When compared - after a pretty good first 15 minutes - the plot went so fast. Meanwhile, the conflict that was built could also be said to be very responsibility, both between Nagabonar and Mariam and between his troops and the remaining Dutch troops.

The duration factor is thought to be the main cause of confusion in watching this film. The duration of this film is more or less the same as before. Here, however, the first 15 minutes are spent on the new story. Meanwhile, points in the previous film, such as the meeting to determine ranks and scenes of war with the Dutch, remain.

The appearance of Puan Maharani may make us wonder. This is because all the elements before the scene of Puan Maharani's speech did not show or even provide clues to explain who the woman was, who was not there, suddenly appeared. Moreover, his speech was so heroic, all the people chimed in as well.

In fact, the role of Puan is actually quite important. He became Soekarno's envoy in charge of declaring Indonesia's independence in North Sumatra.
